There are 6 strands in the P.E. curriculum:
At St Michael's Junior Boys School our boys get to experience all 6 strands of the curriculum for a prolonged period of time throughout the school year.
As part of our aquatics strand work we focus we focus on the water safety element through each child engaging in the Primary Aquatics Water Safety (PAWS) programme with Water Safety Ireland.
We are delighted to have a specialist coach coming in to our school once a week to work on a mixture of fundamental movement skills, games specific skills and general physical literacy.
Our focus on fundamental movement skills is broken into three areas - loco-motor skills (moving your body in various directions), stability skills (balancing your body while in motion) and manipulative skills (controlling objects using body parts).

School P.E Calendar
Each class level works off the same timetable for physical education, we focus on a strand for two months in which that strand gets half an hour per week. The games strand integrated with athletics and fundamental movement skills having a half an hour slot each week.
Aquatics Strand
Every year for the month of June we engage in the PAWS (Primary Aquatic Water Safety) programme. This land based programme teaches children how to be safe around water in homes, farms, pools, beaches and on our waterways. Every class level engages with the programme. You can find out more information on the PAWS programme through the link below.
Games Strand
Every Wednesday we are extremely lucky to have Richie a specialist coach from our local GAA club Arravale Rovers with us. Richie is a fantastic coach and role model for our boys. Richie integrates various skills in to his lessons including fundamental movement skills, general movement and game specific skills. Our boys love working with Richie every week!
Athletics Strand
We focused on the strand of athletics for the months of September & October. We learned all about different ways we can move our bodies - running, walking, jogging, hopping, skipping & jumping! We also worked on a variety of throws like underhand and overhand throws. The boys particularly enjoyed the different races and challenges that they were set! 🏃🏻♂️💨
Dance Strand
For November and December we are focusing on dance! The boys love learning about all of the ways they can move their bodies! 🕺🏻🕺🏻 Some of our First Class boys even came up with a dance routine! 😁
Gymnastics Strand
We are focusing on the P.E curriculum strand of gymnastics for the months of January & February. Mr Whelan has delivered gymnastics lessons through Seesaw which has seen some fantastic engagement! Mr Whelan is working through this strand with the help of the PSSI lesson plans! It is great to see our boys keeping active while learning at home! You can view Mr Whelan's gymnastics lessons below! 😀
Outdoor & Adventure Strand
We are working on the P.E curriculum strand of Outdoor & Adventure for the months of March and April. Click on the link below to view updates on our progress through the strand! For our first week engaging with this strand each class is being challenged to complete a World Book Day themed orienteering session!
Organisation of P.E equipment
We are very lucky to have a fantastic selection of P.E equipment available to us. This equipment allows us to engage in a wide variety of strands throughout the year. We have an organised P.E equipment room that allows for ease of access throughout a busy school day. We have completed an audit on our equipment and have made note of areas that we are lacking.
