Creative Schools is a flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme to enable the creative potential of every child. Creative Schools is led by the Arts Council in partnership with the Department of Education and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
We were delighted to be accepted into the Creative Schools Programme in June 2021. Our Creative Associate who has guided us on our journey so far is Joanna Parkes. Joanna has visited our classes on a number of occasions telling fantastic stories and reliving them through drama activities.

Music Generation
Through our funding from the Arts Council we have been able to have Music Generation with us for the 2021/22 & 2022/23 school years. Derek from Music Generation is a gifted musician who has worked on tempo, beat & rhythm with our Senior Infant & First Class boys. Derek has also introduced a number of interesting instruments to the boys.

Construction.
As part of the Creative Schools process the school community was surveyed on what aspect of the Arts was most applicable to our school. Joanna Parkes surveyed each of our classes via Zoom and found that construction, animation & painting were areas of interest. Parents were also surveyed to see how their children are creative at home. This survey can be viewed here. It was decided that we would focus on construction and animation through Lego. Boxes of Lego were purchased for our Senior Infants & First Class in May 2021. The Lego provides our classes with the opportunity to use their imagination to create fantastic pieces. Take a look at some of their creations to date!

Lego House Competition with Tipperary Town Library.
The First Class boys of St Michael’s JBS created Lego pieces based on the theme of ‘Houses and Homes’. These Lego pieces were displayed in the Tipperary Town Library from November 28th – December 6th. Please pop in to the library to view the Lego houses that have been created and vote for your favourite design. The winning group will be announced on Wednesday December 7th and will receive a fantastic prize!
While in the library be sure to become a member if you are not already and take a look around the fantastic facilities that are on offer.
The First Class boys designed the 'blueprints' for their Lego Houses in groups of three. We then built the houses using exceptional teamwork and engineering. The houses were then transported to the library. We cannot wait to see who the winners are!
